I have a dwarf in my campaign. The C&S3 rules for Dwarves was uninspiring, but luckily I quickly obstained the Dwarf Companion (DC). This was an enlightening experience, though it seemed to raise as many questions as it answered (bash? what bash?). I read it through and helped my player make his merc huscarl. He seemed slightly overpowered compared to the other, human, starting PCs, but was well within reason. With C&S4, many of those points of confusion resolved themselves (oh, _that_ bash). Character generation did not. Book 3's advice to use the DC as is was further unfathomable. Overall, I was very happy with the new (human) CharGen system, but when we looked to rebuild the Dwarf, we noticed a few things: 1. No horoscopes, in C&S3 this meant 2 less Masteries and 2 fewer free skill levels. Yes it's replaced by a clan skill and some cool racial skills, but the balance is close at best. Now, it means losing 2 Masteries and 6 skill levels (2 @ level 2, plus other potential perks. 2. No compansation for the Social Class abilities. While they get a few freebies, they get nothing like the free ability points, BAPs, and skill levels a human gets. Arguably, their Father's Voc lists aren't even that close. 3. The Clan table is little consolation for #1&2. a 50% chance of "get 1 extra skill level." Plus a few glitches (my player's PC was in the running clan. We whet to check the new Running skill and were a little surprised...). Those are really the main issues. The fix may be as easy as just give the Dwarf a Horoscope in addition to their other perks, but I thought I would solicit your input first. |

Trolls weigh 10 lbs + 30 lbs per inch in height over 40 inches. This is modified, as usual, by the build of the Troll. The term "Water" Troll is used for Trolls raised in meres, swamps, lakes, lochs and fens.
The above is for Water Trolls

The weapon damage for humanoids seems atypically low. Example, Orc (pg 3-69) does "Weapon + 1" damage. Better example, Malebranche (3-73) "Weapon +4" or even Demon Warrior "Weapon +10". Now, with a bonus of Str/2, plus a few extra points for Skill level (Attacker's Bonus, table 7.15), the average man-on-the-street will do Weapon +6, and my fighters (who I can't seem to talk out of pumping up their strength) start out doing on the order of Weapon +12, laying waste to the countryside like Demons of Fire. The Orcs don't seem to have a chance. Do Strength and Skill Mods need to be added to the tables in the Beastiary? If so, there is no consistent indication of what these should be. Does an Average orc have a strength of 12? 15? 18? That +9 to damage can make a pretty big difference.? |

I can only apologise for this confusion. More details of different creatures can be found in the Creature Bestiary which gives stat values for these creatures. If you dont have the Creatures Bestiary I would give an average orc a strength of 14 but you as a GM have complete control of this. Steve Turner Actually minimum Orc Strength is 14, and in the
NPC orcs I designed (which didn't make it to the final version) I gave
the average orc 17 Str. You can see the sample orc download here. |
